Tom Lanier
Director
Montana
Tom Lanier is the Director of the Montana office at 1789 Investigations Group, where he oversees operations across much of the Northwestern United States. Tom retired from the United States Marshals Service (USMS) in 2020 after a distinguished 25-year career, during which he made significant contributions to national security and law enforcement.
In the last decade of his service, Tom served as Chief Inspector for the Northwest Region of the Sex Offender Investigations Branch (SOIB). As one of the original members of SOIB, he played a crucial role in building the branch from the ground up. His efforts involved extensive collaboration with federal, state, and local legislative and governing bodies, as well as executive-level law enforcement personnel across hundreds of agencies in his 12-state region. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the strategies and operations that defined the SOIB’s success.
Earlier in his career, Tom was the Supervisory Deputy of the Pacific Northwest Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, where he oversaw all fugitive investigations in Western Washington. His work in this role solidified his reputation as a skilled and dedicated law enforcement professional.
Tom’s expertise in law enforcement training is widely recognized. He has developed and delivered training programs for thousands of federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel across the country. His expertise was also sought internationally; the USMS selected him to develop and conduct training courses at the National Police Academies in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Brasilia, Brazil. Additionally, he was a presenter at INTERPOL in Lyon, France, the INTERPOL Fugitive Conference in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and the International Association of Fugitive Investigators conference in Toronto, Canada.
After retiring from the USMS, Tom continued his commitment to public service by becoming a contractor for the U.S. Marshals Service Body Worn Camera (BWC) Program. In this role, he played a pivotal part in developing and delivering training to fugitive Task Force Officers nationwide, managing and reviewing footage from thousands of hours of BWC videos.
Tom’s service to his country began long before his USMS career. He is a former Marine and a graduate of the University of Washington. His exceptional contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including four USMS Director’s Awards, two of which are Distinguished Service Awards.
Today, as the Director of the Montana office, Tom brings his wealth of experience and leadership to 1789 Investigations Group, where he continues to serve with the same dedication and excellence that defined his law enforcement career.
